Field note

How to clean a GPX route before sharing it

Open a GPX file and check the route silhouette, distance, point count, elevation and embedded private fields. Siftlet reads track points, route points, timestamps, waypoints and common fitness extensions without sending coordinates to a map provider.

Trim the beginning and end when they reveal a home, office or trailhead. Remove timestamps and fitness extensions for a safer public copy. Simplification reduces point count and file size, but a high tolerance can change sharp corners.

Clean GPX works with most route and fitness apps. GeoJSON works well in GIS and web projects. CSV exposes every point for spreadsheets. SVG and PNG make the elevation or route easy to post from Android, iPhone or desktop.
